FINDING YOUR CANINE COMPANION

For more about why it’s important to adopt rather than shop when bringing a dog into your life, go here. In the meantime, here are some quick links to get you started.

Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals usually has several dogs looking for new homes right here on Nantucket. And every 2-3 months, they bring 8 or so to the island from Mississippi. Mutts: young, old, small, medium, and occasionally large, all great, all go quickly, so get on the waiting list!

Petfinder.com allows you to enter your location, breed, and size preferences, and then gives you a list of adoptable dogs that fit your criteria. With over 13,000 rescue groups represented, the site is sure to have a dog that suits you and your family.

Breed Rescue. In the Google Search page, type in the breed you are interested in, add the word “Rescue” and the words “New England.” Most breeds have rescue groups in our area and Google will list them for you.

This site lists all the shelters in Massachusetts.

Private Adoptions. If you are here on Nantucket and have an adoption window of 1 day to 6 months or so, Lori Smith is a good person to know. She can usually hook you up with great dogs looking for homes: loriandfreddy@comcast.net

OTHER SERVICES

Preventing Pet Suffocation. This is an issue I had never really thought about, but is so very important: “Educating the public on the suffocation risks our pets face from chip bags and other products. This page is dedicated to the memory of Blue, our beautiful rescue dog, who suffocated on December 15, 2011 from a Cheetos bag.”

https://www.facebook.com/PreventPetSuffocation

“Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing right in your ear.”
