Nantucket Dog Walk

Jetties Beach

Town Beach

Hard packed sand

Few Dogs

No shade

Best walked in the off-seasons, Jetties is a beautiful hard-packed beach on the north shore of the island. Closed to dogs from April to September, it’s a peaceful in-town walk for the rest of the year.

To find it, head out of town on North Beach Street and take a right onto Bathing Beach Road. Once at the parking lot at the very end of Bathing Beach Road, you have two choices: head into the small playground area to the right of the jetty, or to the longer beach to the left of the jetty. (They are connected, so it's easy to do both, and it makes for a longer walk.)

Jetties Beach has been a place I've found coins, shells (this is a great shell beach), and a lot of sea glass. The best sea glass picks have been at the edge of the jetty (which there is a lot more of at low tide). My friend found a water-weathered arrowhead at the tide line.

For dogs, the flat, straight hard-packed beach allows for lots of running and scouting for beach treats. The beach at high tide ends at a retaining wall. At low tide, you have room to scoot around it and go a little further.

As you walk back to the parking lot, be on the lookout for the Steamship and Hyline ferries heading in and out of the harbor.
